Sad Passings: Odetta and Kay Kelly
We are saddened by the recent loss of 2 inspiring sheroes, Kay Kelly who was considered the Grandmother of the Sanctuary movement and singer and civil rights activist Odetta. We are grateful to Jane Roberts of 34 Million Friends of UNFPA for sharing this clip of Odetta raising her voice for women’s lives:
We also remember Kay Kelly, whose courage and compassion helped so many:
“Kelly’s knowledge certainly went without saying during the 1986 trial of 11 Sanctuary smugglers, including the Rev. John Fife and Jim Corbett, co-founders of the movement.
Kelly was 62 when sentenced to 30 days house arrest for refusing to testify. (She was “paroled” after 17 days.)
She helped refugees fleeing death squads in Central America because of her “most fundamental religious beliefs,” she told the U.S. District Court in an affidavit.
Failure to do so could cost her the “opportunity for eternal life,” she wrote.”
