Memo to Yahoo–The “Cure” Is Not The Cause
This is ever so ironic from a company that runs a major search engine…
Yahoo has an “enhancement” (a tasteless choice of words IMHO) where if you want to donate money to fight breast cancer, you can “search for a cause”. Unfortunately, what that means is that you can search for a retailer who will donate a portion of your purchase proceeds to Susan G Komen for the Cure, not that your money will go towards cause-related research.
“Do you want to help in the fight against breast cancer? Add Yahoo!’s Search for a Cause enhancement so you can make a difference when you buy items from select online retailers.
For each enhancement added in the month of October, Yahoo! will donate $1 to Susan G Komen for the Cure.
Unfortunately, as we have said numerous times before, you cannot cure something if you don’t understand and address the cause, which in the case of breast cancer goes far beyond genetic factors (which only account for 10% of breast cancer cases) or personal factors which are the primary focus of attention during National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Would that companies like Yahoo and the gazillions of others that are so concerned about women that they turn all their products pink would use their clout to shine a light on pesticides, pollution, radiation and other KNOWN causes of cancer. But that would be far less profitable and would necessitate many companies cleaning up their own act. In the meantime, the profiteering at the expense of women continues.
