Isn’t the Pentagon supposed to be defending the safety of innocent babies, not poisoning them?  With this kind of military defense, who needs enemies!
Press Release from the Environmental Working Group:

“Under pressure from the White House and the Pentagon, the Environmental Protection Agency has decided not to set cleanup or safety standards for a toxic rocket fuel chemical that contaminates drinking water supplies for millions of Americans.

The Washington Post on Sunday reported EPA’s decision, which has not yet been publicly announced. It is a victory for defense contractors who have been fighting to avoid expensive clean-up operations at rocket launch sites and other military facilities where improper disposal of perchlorate has polluted groundwater. Scientists have linked perchlorate to thyroid problems that could impair the development of fetuses, infants and young children.

“The EPA had an opportunity to set a stringent drinking water standard for this toxic chemical that could have benefited millions of Americans, especially children,” said Dr. Anila Jacob, MD, MPH, senior scientist at the Environmental Working Group. “Instead, the agency has chosen to ignore the science and listen to White House and Pentagon officials who care more about protecting defense industry profits than the health of America’s children.”

The disclosure that EPA will not take action against perchlorate contamination in water comes as an important new study by University of Texas researchers confirms that breast-feeding infants are routinely exposed to levels of perchlorate in breast milk that exceed the EPA “safe” dose. This finding is troubling because perchlorate interferes with the body’s ability to produce thyroid hormones, and inadequate levels of thyroid hormones interfere with normal brain development and growth.

Texas researchers found that nursing mothers secrete more of the toxic chemical into their breast milk than iodine, the building block of thyroid hormones. For developing children, the process is doubly dangerous: not only are breast-feeding babies getting unsafe doses of perchlorate, they are being denied iodine that could help offset some of the toxic chemical’s effects.

EPA has been under pressure from the Pentagon to overlook the potential health threats posed by perchlorate in order to help defense contractors avoid spending hundreds of millions of dollars to clean up contaminated sites.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recently found perchlorate in the urine of all 2,820 people tested. The public health agency also found that one-third of American women whose iodine levels are on the low side and who had perchlorate in their urine demonstrated significant decreases in thyroid hormone levels.

Jacob noted that breast milk is by far the healthiest food for infants, and mothers should continue to breast-feed their babies. However, the perchlorate levels found in breast milk by the Texas study and others are alarming.”

From The Independent (UK):

“The Afghan president, Hamid Karzai, has pardoned three men who had been found guilty of gang raping a woman in the northern province of Samangan.

The woman, Sara, and her family found out about the pardon only when they saw the rapists back in their village”

“Everyone was shocked,” said Sara’s husband, Dilawar, who like many Afghans uses only one name. “These were men who had been sentenced and found guilty by the Supreme Court, walking around freely.”

“A copy of the pardon was numbered, dated in May and appeared to bear the personal signature of Hamid Karzai. It recommended the men’s release because, it said, “they had been forced to confess to their crimes.”

When showed copies of the presidential pardon and court papers, President Karzai’s spokesman, Hamayun Hamidzada, was visibly shocked and said that if the documents proved genuine, Mr Karzai would be “upset and appalled.”

“The MP, Mir Ahmad Joyenda, said cases similar to Sara’s were actually becoming more common. The police and the courts, he said, were usually under the sway of local commanders. “The commanders, the war criminals, still have armed groups,” he said. “They’re in the government. Karzai, the Americans, the British sit down with them. They have impunity. They’ve become very courageous and can do whatever crimes they like.”

Sara and Dilawar are again in hiding (see original for clarification), having felt too vulnerable to stay in their village. Dilawar was prepared to discuss the case. In Afghanistan, speaking about rape means risking further dishonour, but when asked whether he minded Sara’s story being publicised, Dilawar said, “We’ve already lost our son, our honour, we’ve sold our land to pay for legal costs and we’ve lost our home – what else can we lose?”

From RAWA:

A 13-year old Afghan girl was gang-raped by nine men in Takhar

“In Talaqan (capital city of Takhar province) nine men raped a 13-year old girl. Six people, including three policemen, have been accused of being involved in the crime and detained.

The girl is named Rida and lives in the fourth district of Talaqan. She is bed-resting in her home due to the rape.

On 18 August, as she talked to PAN in her home, she said with tearful eyes, “Three days back, some distance from home, some men, a few of which wore the police cloths, came. They threw me into a police car and took me away.”

She said that she shouted a lot but there was no one to hear her voice and added, “These nine men tied up my hands and feet in a house and took me to a room.”Rida said the men gave her an alcoholic drink and then each of them raped her turn by turn. She lost her consciousness then.

She said that the men locked her in the room for three days and raped her several times.

She said that after three days she was able to escape from the house (which is near the Pul-e-Shahr Rawan of Talaqan) to the local police station of Takhar.

While shouting at the top of her lungs, she demanded the president of the country, Hamid Karzai, to hang the men who had raped her.

Rida’s mother, Masooma, also demanded from the government to sentence the criminals to death.

Masooma said that her daughter was in a bad state of health due to the crime against her.

Dr. Ashrafuddin Ayni, head of the Central Hospital of Talaqan City, also said that their medical reports prove that the girl had been raped, but said that the girl had not been in the condition to be admitted in the hospital.

Officer Ziauddin Mahmoodi, security commander of Takhar, said that six men, three of whom are policemen from Mazar-e-Sharif have been arrested.

Mahmoodi told PAN, “A man named Farid who lives in Takhar takes Rida with him with an excuse. He sits her in a car of the Mazar-e-Sharif police and then takes her to an unknown place where she is raped.”

He said that the three detained men had brought the police car with them from Balkh and were involved with Farid in the crime.

It is worth mentioning that in this year, this is the fifth case of rape of young girls in Talaqan. The worst of these was the rape of an 8-year old girl by a 20-year old man. Askar Mohammad had been sentenced to death as he had killed the girl after he had raped her.

Some men have been arrested by the police regarding the other three cases.”

From GMA News:

“The complainant’s camp in the Subic rape case on Thursday said they will insist that convicted rapist US Lance Corporal Daniel Smith be turned over to Philippine custody when the Supreme Court holds oral arguments on the matter Friday. In a radio interview, lawyer Evalyn Ursua, the victim’s legal counsel, said they expect to go up against Philippine government lawyers who will insist that Smith remain in the US Embassy’s custody.

“Ine-expect namin igigiit ng Philippine government na manatili si Smith sa US Embassy. Yan ang kanilang position. Kami igigiit namin dapat sa atin ang custody (We expect the Philippine government’s lawyers to argue that Smith be allowed to remain in the US Embassy. We will insist that he be in Philippine government custody),” Ursua said in an interview on dzBB radio.

Smith was convicted on December 4, 2006 of raping a woman in Subic in November 2005. But shortly after he was whisked to the Makati City Jail, the US serviceman was spirited away and was brought to the US Embassy.

On the other hand, Smith’s lawyer Jose Justiniano said Smith will not likely appear before the High Court Friday, saying they have not even received notice for the hearing.

“Ngayong hapon wala kaming notice of hearing. Kami bilang abogado wala kaming notice of hearing (We as his lawyers have not received a notice of hearing),” Justiniano said in a separate interview on dzBB.

Besides, Justiniano said the major parties at the hearing will be Philippine government officials since they signed the Visiting Forces Agreement.

It is the Solicitor General who will argue the case for the Philippine government and not them, he added.

In the interview, Ursua said the High Court will also hear on Friday oral arguments who should have custody of Smith, and if the US should be cited in contempt of court.

Also, she said they are hoping the High Court will decide on the matter before this year ends.

“Pag nagtawag sila ng oral argument, ang decision di malayo (If the high court calls for oral arguments, a decision may be forthcoming),” Ursua said.”

Amnesty International – August 17, 2008  An Iranian woman been sentenced to 100 lashes, after being found guilty of adultery at a retrial. The woman, Shamaheh Ghorbani, claims that she only said she was having a relationship with a man found at her house to ensure that her husband and brothers, who stabbed the man to death, were not charged with murder.Shamameh Ghorbani, aged 34, had originally been sentenced to execution by stoning in June 2006 after her brothers and husband murdered a man they found in her house, and she too was nearly killed when they stabbed her. In a letter to the court submitted by her lawyer during her first trial she said: “Since I am a rural, illiterate woman and I didn’t know the law, I thought that if I confessed to a relationship with the dead man, I could clear my brothers and husband of intentional murder. I said these untrue words in court and then understood I had done myself an injury.”
