For a blogger, there is nothing that says welcome back after being on the road like finding a really good story about a major misogynist from your hometown on a seriously obscure website rather than in the morning paper where it belongs. But kudos to Ethics Daily which reports that Bruce Ware, who teaches Christian theology at the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary in Louisville, KY delivered a sermon that he said describes his “complementarian” view of SB theology as part of a series of sermons at the Denton (TX) Bible Church on “Biblical Manhood & Womanhood,” According to the article Ware claims that,

“One reason that men abuse their wives is because women rebel against their husband’s God-given authority.”

and that,

“(W)omen desire to have their own way instead of submitting to their husbands because of sin.”

and,

“And husbands on their parts, because they’re sinners, now respond to that threat to their authority either by being abusive, which is of course one of the ways men can respond when their authority is challenged–or, more commonly, to become passive, acquiescent, and simply not asserting the leadership they ought to as men in their homes and in churches,”

Now aren’t you sorry you didn’t crawl out of bed on Sunday morning to hear that spew?

  1. Ministers are basically social control agents. Many have no true sense of spirit. They are driven by a need to judge and to be righteous. I wonder what lurks in this guy’s shadow side?

Peace is possible if we all learn to question the insanity of human beliefs.

  2. I”m becoming aware of the vastness of mysogeny and how The Church conspires to sread it…
Please stop believing in the Male God Myth

  3. This is why right thinking Americans found Mary Winkler guilty of only voluntary manslaughter and spent only seven months in custody, five of those awaiting trial.

  4. I can’t believe the local paper said they have someone “looking into” that. It’s outrageous; it doesn’t need “fact checking” or “background info.” It’s newsworthy as it is as absolutely outrageous and sexist. I mean, if some college professor came out and said that the reason black people are in jail so much is because they are rebelling against their god-given purpose to serve and obey white people, how much “looking into” would the media do??? None! it would be front page news and talking heads would nag it to death for weeks.
Isn’t there an alt weekly there in Louisville? Are they covering it?

  5. DeLani, yes there is an alt weekly and I write a column for them! I passed the story along to the editor (one of the good guys) who promptly blogged it with a link to my blog, since they are a weekly and this broke after this week’s deadline, that was the most timely thing to do. The Louisville Courier Journal is owned by Gannett, used to be a good paper, but has gone horribly downhill, actual journalism is a rarity on their pages anymore, partly it is a Gannett thing, but also I think reflective of the whole print media business–no money means bad product.

  6. omg…dispicable, absolutely dispicable. i can hardly believe that that crap would get spewed from the pulpit.

    ignorant, vile, and extraordinarily dangerous.
