Catharine MacKinnon On MSNBC’s David Shuster’s “Pimping Out” Comment
Many thanks to Media Watch for sending out an alert regarding our recent post about MSNBC’s David Shuster’s remark that Chelsea Clinton was being “pimped out”. Responding to Media Watch’s alert, Catharine MacKinnon had this to say:
“This is outrageous. It makes Chelsea a prostitute and Hillary a madam, meaning pimp. Shuster’s association of women in public life with sexual sale, casting them all as what used to be termed “public women,” is way out of date even in terms of male ideology, itself archaic. The comment also shows total ignorance of what being in prostitution–i.e. being pimped out–really is. Chelsea did not even “sort of” run away from home fleeing sexual abuse, get picked up in a bus station starving by a predator who addicted her to drugs, then be beaten and forced to sexually service scores of men a day and turn over the proceeds. His “wierd sort of” analogy is as insulting to real prostituted women as it is to Hillary and Chelsea.”
