Breast Cancer Sells

I have an article out on Alternet today about how women’s mass media magazines cover breast cancer and (don’t) cover domestic violence.  You can read it here.

  2. Thank you. I have long held that the cancer world is overpopulated by alarmists and too-conservative medical establishment types. I am married to a man whose first wife died of cancer, however, so because he dearly loved her she is part of our family (two kids between them, one between us), I say less around here than I otherwise might. In her case, she knew something wasn’t right (starting with her breasts) but no one would take her seriously.

She finally told a doctor she would not leave his examining room until he gave her the scans she thought she needed. They found cancer spread throughout her entire body. She was in her thirties, and though “given” 6 months to live, she lived for seven years, half of them cancer-free. NO ONE is an expert.

I resisted mammography until a few months prior to age 50 and have had but one other one since (I am 56). I read a while back and connot find the source, that it is not uncommon for the pressure of the mammograph machine to actually squeeze a tumor in such a way that it is carried through the body. If you have come across this study I’d be very interested in knowing about it.I understand ultrasound exams are worthwhile but no one seems to be doing them. I’m also having trouble finding more about that.

Also, that’s an amazing figure you gave: 10-20 deaths in 10,000 women. As for domestic violence, what are the figures for that? As in, deaths per 10,000.

  3. Lucinda, once again you have hit the nail on the proverbial head. I am sickened - nauseated constantly - by the positive spin on breast cancer and how it is USED to sell products!

Also, yes, how many women are suffering and no one hears their screams in the dark…Nor do we hear that this is even much of an issue! Violence does not sell, but yes, women with hacked off breasts seems to do the trick!

I wrote this last year and hopefully it has gotten people to think of breast cancer in a new way - just as your piece has done.

Getting breast cancer ain’t no accident. I hope your readers will consider this…
