Connecting With Women in Unconnected Places (Updated)
Last weekend I had the good fortune to hear a presentation at the Idea Festival in Louisville Kentucky by Georgia Popplewell, Amira Al Hussaini and Ethan Zuckerman, all of whom are associated with Global Voices, entitled “The Internet is NOT Flat,” which gave a fascinating look at how the availability of electricity and cable lines impacts how we communicate and what we know. I was really excited about this presentation because one of the things that has been on my radar screen for awhile is how to increase information on this blog about women in parts of the world that have limited internet access, such as Africa, Asia, etc.
After the presentation I asked Georgia Popplewell if she could point me in the direction of some blogs and sites that specifically address women’s human rights issues in those parts of the world. She quickly responded with informaton about several excellent blogs:
Black Looks which is written by Global Voices former Sub-Saharan Africa editor, Sokari Ekine, a Nigeria-born activist working on women’s and LGBT issues and
Gender Focus is another very worthy read (with thanks to FPN member Cathy Garger for passing along this especially thought-provoking post on that blog)
Several other sites that provide a wealth of information about African women are:
All Africa’s page on women’s issues
IRIN gender page
Pambazuka News’ page on women and gender and
So armed with a whole lot more knowledge (and looking to continue to expand that knowledge in other areas such as Asia, South America, etc.), look for significantly expanded coverage on the FPN Blog about women in less digitally connected parts of the world.
