I am still in the process of posting all the info/thoughts about last week’s International Women’s Peace Conference. Don’t know why it is that some weeks are so slow and then there is an avalanche, but this week is an avalanche and it is taking quite awhile to get caught up. In the meantime, I do want to post a link to Col. Ann Wright’s excellent review of the conference (and the predictable yet unfortunate comments that follow it).
I actually ran into Ann a few weeks ago at the USSF and she was distributing an excellent new brochure, “What Every Girl Should Know About the U.S. Military: Consider This–Before You Enlist” which is available from War Resisters League. The brochure has some excellent info on sexual assault in the military and should become a part of every counter-recruiting effort.
Also here is a link to Danica Anderson’s review of the Conference, which has some very valid points. Anderson was also one of the presenters (as was Wright) at the Conference.
As Anderson points out, diversity was an issue at the conference, with 3 out of 4 of the Honorary Chairwomen being white American women and quite a contrast to the the US Social Forum. Time for a Women’s Social Forum, perhaps?
Postscript–I see that the Conference site is starting to post keynote addresses and pictures, check it out! I will be posting some of my pics here in the next few days. the photo above is Ann Wright with Nobel Peace Prize winner Jody Williams.
Still more conference followup to come, but wanted to post this in a semi-timely fashion.
