Woman Appeals to Nebraska Supreme Court for the Right to Use the Word Rape

According to the Associated Press, the woman who was barred by Judge Jeffre Cheuvront from using the words “victim,” “sexual assault,” “assailant” and “rape” in the trial of the man accused of (oh hell we’re going to say it) raping her has asked the Nebraska Supreme Court to review the ban.

There is absolutely no doubt that the ability to name a crime  is an essential part in obtaining  justice and is a basic human right.  In the words of Tory Bowen who has agreed to let her name be used by the press in this unusual case,  “I want the freedom to be able to point (to Safi) in court and say, ‘That man raped me.’”   We hope that the Nebraska Supreme Court will have the wisdom to grant Ms. Bowen that right.
