You know it’s Monday morning when…according to the San Francisco Chronicle:
“Seeing nonwhite men on the Sunday shows is as rare as seeing them on the floor of the U.S. Senate. According to a study to be released Monday by the liberal media organization Media Matters for America, which was obtained by The Chronicle, at least 77 percent of the 2,150 guests who appeared on the four major Sunday shows in 2005-06 were men; at least 82 percent were white.”
The National Press Club has come up with a good idea for breaking the cycle:
“Last week at the National Press Club in Washington, the organization hosted an event where 50 female experts and 30 reporters and producers from various media outlets swapped business cards and mingled.”
I cannot count the times I have heard editors tell me they can’t find women to quote or women to write for them–this is total bs. One of my favorite episodes of this was someone (a male someone to be specific) who was organizing an event tell the organizing committee he couldn’t find a woman to speak not 20 minutes after I had volunteered to do exactly that. It’s not accidental ignorance, it is willful misogyny on the part of the media, corporations, etc. It will be interesting to see if the National Press Club’s efforts pay off, might also be a tactic worth trying on a local level.
