All About Moms

A few empowering reads for Mother’s Day:
Jill Sheffield looks at motherhood from a global perspective:

“Safe motherhood is a rights and equity issue and we need to focus on it as such. The economic argument—that countries simply cannot afford to lose so many young, productive people—is also very powerful with important decision-makers, including finance and planning ministers, and corporations.”

Jessica Valenti (check out her new book, Full Frontal Feminism) addresses the issue of How Much are Moms Worth. I am so excited to see her mention of the Global Women’s Strike whose motto is “Invest in Caring Not Killing–perhaps the time has finally come!!?? Which brings us to 2 great books for Mother’s Day:

Ellen Bravo: Taking on the Big Boys is a very readable and totally right on target look about the fallacy of the so-called Mommy Wars and Moms who “opt out” that gives an in-depth explanation of,

“what’s really holding women back – the Big Boys, those who control wealth and power in this country and their surrogates. Bravo details the minimizing, patronizing and demonizing tactics employed by the Big Boys to maintain the status quo – a status quo that has done more than anything to drive women out of top jobs and devalue their caregiving work.”

and Riane Eisler’s The Real Wealth of Nations, which looks at the economic value of caring and the damage done by ignoring it’s worth.

And not to forget our elders, here is a marvelous article about the Raging Grannies.

Enjoy!
