Last week, Amnesty International released a report documenting the horrific levels of sexual assault being perpetrated on indigenous American women. The report was interoduced with a quote from activist Sarah Deer.
This week, Deer has written a wonderful piece talking about why she worked with AI on this report and why it is so important. Her reflections give much needed insights into just what is at stake and the trauma that has been inflicted by ignoring this problem. She concludes, “What are we asking for? Nothing more than human dignity. Nothing less than justice.”
