More Silences: Sen. McCaskill Uninvited to Speak at Daughter’s Graduation
Yesterday I posted a quick blurb about Joan Baez being denied a chance to sing at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. Today we learn that Senator Claire McCaskill, who had been invited to speak at her daughter’s graduation from a Catholic high school has been uninvited. Why? Because of her stances on abortion rights and stem cell research. I guess this is the school’s parting lesson in the right to free speech.
While Tillie Olsen’s Silences primarily addressed the silencing of the written word, the silencing of both Baez and McCaskill serve to illustrate that the scope of the problem goes far beyond the written word. It is time that we reclaim Olsen’s language and speak about this censorship for what it is, the silencing of women.
