The following is from the Organization for Women’s Freedom in Iraq. Unfortunately I have not been able to load the poster on our website, due to an apparent problem with the file. This is a sad and dangerous day for women in Iraq, please hold them in your thoughts as you celebrate IWD.
Dear OWFI Friends around the world,
We are preparing for a symbolic IWD event in our Baghdad headquarters. We are not sure how many of us can make it and arrive to our OWFI facility on that day. Nevertheless, our activists are determined to celebrate that day with the following agenda:
Press Conference: adressing media about attrocities against Iraqi women and demanding the repeal of death penalty, especially against 3 women in Kadhimiya prison and demanding the authorities to stop rapes and torture against detained women
Speeches of Owfi leadership about the importance of women’s activism directed towards full equality which is the essence of March 8
“Freedom Space 4″ poetry event to be started with women poets, but mainly addressing artificial and imposed sectarian differences between Iraqi “Sunniâ€? and “Shiiteâ€? youth and women, especially that the poets will come from the most dangerous zones around Baghdad
Please see our attached poster for IWD 2007 in Baghdad.
Although the poster may look gloomy, still it reflects our turbulent reality and a strong determination that our struggles continue until a better day comes.
From Baghdad we wish you all
A Happy International Women’s Day
Yanar Mohammed
