* After 9/11, U.S. bases in the Philippines re-opened…
* Women were over half of the 800 people disappeared in recent political violence under the U.S.-backed Arroyo dictatorship…
* Decades of economic and military domination by the U.S. have resulted in the massive exportation of Filipinas as domestic workers and mail-order brides…

JOIN US for a discussion, and celebration of International Women’s Day — and women’s resistance!

About the Film Series:
===================
Too often the roles of Global South women in struggles for economic
and social justice are ignored. Or they are mentioned in passing,
without a full look at the richness of their experiences, and lessons
they offer us all.
* What can we learn from women’s contributions?
* Why does colonization depend on sexism?
* What can Global South women teach us about how racism, patriarchy, & imperialism work, that we might otherwise miss?

The theme for this year’s Gather the Women IWD events is “Celebrating the Ways of Women. Here is a statement that you can feel free to use at your own events:
We invite women to demonstrate
their courage to risk leaving old conformities
by joining with millions of others throughout the world
to celebrate women’s true worth,
to express shared concern for our human family,
and to create and support actions
that will enable humanity to live together
in a balanced, harmonious and peaceful world.Gather the Women is evoking at a profound level
an experience of our own woman’s worth to the world. As women we bring life forward.
We are in touch with the cycles of life
and we function in a context that is deeply relational.
We have the capacity to generate
creative solutions that benefit
all life on the planet.Gather the Women is creating
a rich exchange of cultural values
to dissolve the ties that bind us to the illusion
that one segment of our human family can win
while another loses.Together we women are contributing
to a new collective wisdom
and we are lending our strength
to that which we wish to embrace.
From this emerging balance is being born
a new dimension of our humanity.

From Australia:
International Women’s Day is a ‘red letter’ day in our calendar, one when
women celebrate the lives and achievements of all women around the
globe. This year, we are extremely fortunate to have Malalai Joya, the Afghan
parliamentarian, in Australia at the invitation of UNIFEM and Melbourne
supporters of Malalai are privileged to be able to host two events for her:
a lunch on Sunday March 11th and a speaking forum on Monday March
12th.
The youngest and arguably the most outspoken and courageous defender of
women’s human rights in the Afghan parliament, Malalai works under
constant threat of death. Melbourne events will provide a unique opportunity
for all to hear of Malalai’s courageous work, obtain firsthand information
of Afghan women’s lives today and meet Malalai, in person. She is a local
hero in Afghanistan and a champion amongst all women: not to be missed!
Please feel free to circulate this invitation far and wide.
With warm wishes
