Abolish “Reference Man” standards for radiation exposure
The latest newsletter from Breast Cancer Action contains a chilling report about how
allowable standards of radiation exposure are determined. Note that the terrm here is ‘allowable’ because there is no such thing as safe exposure, radiation is a known cause of cancer and is not safe in any amount. What is blood-curdling about this is that ‘allowable’ standards are based on what is called “Reference Man” who is an adult male who is 5′-7″ tall and weighs 154 pounds. There is no such thing as “Reference Woman” or “Reference Child” that takes into consideration how radiation affects the bodies of those who don’t happen to be adult males. Go here to sign a letter demanding that this change and here for more information about the issues of how radiation affects human beings.
And if you happen to be in a really bad mood after reading this, here is another letter you might want to sign to tighten the limit for plutonium in drinking water. Yes you read that correctly, plutonium in our drinking water…
