NOW’s conundrum
Over the last several years, the National Organization for Women has done an excellent job of making clear why issues such as Katrina and the war in Iraq are women’s issues. Unfortunately, this leads to NOW being in a bit of an odd position as they laud Hillary Clinton’s run for the presidency as the,
“first woman ever to enter the race for U.S. president as the clear frontrunner for a major party’s nomination.”
NOW is absolutely correct, that much like Nancy Pelosi becoming the first Speaker of the House, this is a very significant milestone.
In the same newletter congragulating Clinton, NOW also has a statement explaining why they are against the war in Iraq that urges NOW members to join in the demonstrations in Washington, DC on Jan 27th. The conundrum of course is that Clinton has been, by and large, a supporter of the war. As NOW notes, the field of 2008 presidential
“contenders include a woman frontrunner, an African American, a Latino, and several pro-choice, pro-peace, pro-family men”.
Unfortunately, Clinton’s record does not qualify her as a pro-peace candidate. Which leaves NOW in the uncomfortable position of opposing the war but congragulating one of it’s supporters. Stay tuned…
