Rate of Intimate Partner Violence still high among American Indians

Rates of intimate partner violence decreased between 1993 and 2004, according to a report by the U.S. Department of Justice. However the news was not good for all segments of the population.
According to an article in Indian Country Today by Sarah Deer, the rate of vicitmizations per 1000 women over the age of 12 for American Indian and Alaskan Native women is 18.2 versus the overall population rate of 2.6. That is a huge but not terrribly surprising differential. Deer’s article explains the statistics in detail and offers some good thoughts about why the problem is so much worse among indigenous populations and how to better approach preventing and responding to the problem.
