CONGRESSMAN KUCINICH TO INTRODUCE 100+ PEACE GRANNIES
VISITING 100 SENATORS TO URGE AN END TO THE WAR;
Grannies say: We Urge a Purge of the Surge”
The GRANNY PEACE BRIGADE of New York, a group of 18 grandmothers who
got arrested and jailed when they tried to enlist at the Times Square
Recruiting Center in October 2005, along with grannies from at least 21
states in the U.S., will launch their January 18 Granny Descent on the
Senate with a press conference hosted by Congressman Dennis Kucinich in the
Rayburn Office Building at 9 A.M. It is expected that there will be nearly
200 grannies there. *
The grannies, extremely concerned that Congress may be pulling back from
the wishes of the American people to end the war in Iraq, will then visit
all 100 Senators or their staffs to urge that they not provide funding for a
continuation of the occupation. They will endorse Cong. Kucinich’s
resolution for withdrawal and give Senators a copy of “Out of Iraq,” by
George McGovern and William R. Polk The grannies will present their own 12
Points of Peace recommendations, also.
Other highlights of the press conference will be the introduction of a
mother whose son was killed in Iraq, Elaine Johnson, a member of Gold Star
Families for Peace, who will be arriving from North Carolina to join the
Grannies. Another noted guest will be former Army Reserve Colonel Ann
Wright, representing Hawaii, who left the diplomatic corps after George Bush
invaded Iraq in protest of his action. Ms. Wright has just returned from
Cuba where she observed conditions in Guantanamo.
The oldest New York GRANNY PEACE BRIGADE jailbird, Marie Runyon,
closing in on 92, was just awarded the New York State Martin Luther King,
Jr. Humanitarian Award on MLK Day, January 15, in Albany, and will be there,
though legally blind and deaf.
Many other remarkable and determined women will participate in this
extraordinary and historic event. Joan Wile, 75, of the GR ANNY PEACE
BRIGADE, feels that “Time is running out. It is our responsibility as wise
elders to do all within our power to stop this senseless and catastrophic
war which is killing and maiming our young people and countless Iraqis and
destroying our reputation around the world. We URGE A PURGE OF THE SURGE,
which can only result in more of our precious youth being denied a full and
enjoyable life as we have been privileged to live.”
