A very practical way to help women in Darfur
For all the marches, rallies and petitions, most of us end up feeling quite helpless to stop violence such as is being experienced by the women in the Darfur region of Sudan. But Jewish World Watch in partnership with Solar Cookers International, KoZon Foundation and CARE-Chad, has come up with an idea that is brilliantly simple. They are providing solar cookers to the Iridimi Camp in eastern Chad that is now home to 2500 Darfur refugees. The cookers make it possible for the women in the camp to cook for their families without leaving the camp to get firewood which is extremely dangerous and leaves them vulnerable to rape, kidnapping and other violence.
Cooking with the solar cookers is less labor intensive which frees up the women’s time so that they can make handicrafts that they can sell for income. Some women are paid to assemble the cookers and to teach other women how to use them.
If you go to the JWW website, you can donate to this wonderful effort. By enabling women in this very simple way many lives can be saved. Imagine if all national security was based on such a concept!
