Atrocities: RCMP leaves woman naked in cell in dead of winter
You’ve got to hand it to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for chivalry. In response to an investigation, they have issued an apology to Carol Ikkusek for her treatment while in their custody. After her arrest when she threatened to harm herself she was moved to a small cell that had no mattress and was left for 2 days to sleep naked on a steel bench. For 16 hours she was not even given a blanket. In the dead of winter. In Labrador.
The RCMP has disciplined the officer involved although she is still employed. Inspector Greg Bursey offered this apology,
“I’m sorry she felt that she was mistreated in any way or put through any undue hardship, but certainly there was no intent,” Bursey said.
They are sorry she “felt” mistreated? There was no “intent”?? This isn’t a question of what she felt, or some unthinking officer. There is absolutely no doubt she was mistreated and that her human rights were violated. Ms. Ikkusek deserves far better.
