Atrocities: Women Vets Suffering from high rates of PTSD and other problems (U.S.)

More than 155,000 women have been deployed by the U.S. military in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.  Many are now coming home suffering from serious psychological trauma.  The VA reports that more than a third of the female vets that were evaluated between 2002 and last August had a preliminary diagnosis of PTSD and these numbers are low because so many vets either don’t seek help or seek help from other sources.

According to an AP story, one of the biggest factors in psychological problems for women vets is “military sexual trauma” which is defined to include both verbal and physical harrassment and assault.  Many women are also facing problems getting back into family life, particularly when it involves taking care of their children after long separations.

In addition, the story reports that the VA has found that an astounding 29% of the women they have treated upon return are suffering from genital or urinary problems, 33% from digestive illnesses and 42% had back problems.

Funny, they don’t mention all this stuff in the glossy recruiting brochures.
